Capstone Project
Workshop - Introduction to Voice: The Power of Singing
The purpose of this capstone project is to develop a curriculum that can be taught to underserved, low-income students that have a disparity of resources and departmental funding for the Performing Arts. The curriculum is based in Vocal Pedagogy and Music Theory, pertaining to Sabrina's educational background and instruction.
Project Overview
Who?
Sabrina will be patterning with the organization BRITE.

BRITE (Building Resilience and Inclusion Through Engagement) is a youth development program engaging teens and young adults ages 12-25 in advocacy and action around issues they care about. They promote health and well-being and seek to help change social norms that encourage, accept and allow risky activities such underage and binge drinking, impaired driving, tobacco use, prescription drug and marijuana abuse. They also promote engaging young people in advocacy, education & prevention.

Why?
The research has been done. Students with a music education develop a multitude of benefits than their peers who do not. Some of these benefits include, but are not limited to:
Development of language and reasoning
A mastery of memorization
Better developed craftsmanship of their work
Increased coordination
Increased success in society
Emotional development
Helps build imagination and intellectual curiosity
Development of spatial intelligence
Development of teamwork skills
Responsible risk taking (dealing with fear and anxiety)
These are just to name a few of the benefits a music education brings.

This sounds amazing! Why wouldn’t you want multiple generations of students to reap the rewards a music education could bring?
Unfortunately, most underserved and low-income institutions either have no music education program or have an underdeveloped (and overcrowded) music education program due to a lack of funding and resources.
This project would assist and benefit these developing programs.

This project would also meet the needs of BRITE by helping cultivate a lasting relationship between BRITE and Santa Paula High School.
